What is a Bris?
A Brit Milah, commonly known as a Bris, is a Jewish religious circumcision ceremony performed on the eighth day of a male infant's life, in accordance with Jewish law. This ancient rite symbolizes the covenant between God and the Jewish people, tracing its origins back to the biblical patriarch Abraham. The ceremony is both a religious and communal event, often accompanied by prayers, blessings, and a celebratory meal.
What to Expect
-
Preparation: In the days leading up to the Bris, we will discuss with you the details of the ceremony, answer any questions, and provide guidance on preparing your home for the event.
-
The Ritual: The Bris typically includes prayers, blessings, and the actual circumcision. It is a joyful occasion attended by family and friends.
Roles: Key roles include the Mohel (myself), the Sandek (the person who holds the baby), Kvater (the person who carries the baby into the ceremony), and the parents. We can work with your family to find a way for all to be included.
Procedure: The circumcision is performed with sterile instruments and local anesthesia, ensuring the baby's comfort and safety.
-
Blessings and Naming: Following the circumcision, the baby is blessed, and his Hebrew name is announced. This is a special moment that welcomes the child into the Jewish community.
Wound Care
Instructions
1) If a gauze dressing is placed, leave it on for 48 hrs. If it falls off early, no need to replace it.
For diaper changes, if any stool is seen on the penis or gauze, gently cleanse the area with wipes. Then apply a small amount of Vaseline to the penis.
If the gauze has not fallen off after 48 hours, grasp the edge of the gauze and gently unwrap it. If need be, soak in a warm bath to loosen the gauze. If the cord stump has not fallen off, use sponge bath instead.
2) If there is skin covering the head of the penis, push it down at every diaper change. This maneuver is performed to expose the ridge below the head of the penis, but is not necessary if the ridge is easily seen.
3) You may sponge bathe your child at any time, but do not immerse in a bath for 48 hrs.
4) Apply vaseline to the wound until fully healed (typically 7-10 days). There may be residual swelling for up to 6 weeks.
5) A soft, yellowish material may be seen on the head of the penis. While this material may be confused with infection, it is actually part of the healing process and there’s no need to remove it.
